I will write and illustrate a custom children's picture book
About this gig
I will write and illustrate a custom children's picture book, delivered as a complete, print-ready digital file with an original story and matching artwork on every page.
A custom picture book is one of the most personal gifts you can give a child, and it is also a serious creative project. I handle both halves of that project: I write the rhyming or prose story from your idea, and I illustrate it page by page so the words and pictures grow together rather than being stitched from stock art. Everything below describes a digital download. You receive files, not a physical bound book mailed to your door, though the files I deliver are formatted so any print-on-demand service or local printer can produce a real book from them.
What you get
- An original story written from scratch to your brief, in age-appropriate English (board-book simplicity, early-reader rhyme, or a longer read-aloud narrative, your choice).
- Hand-made original illustrations, one full-page or spread illustration per page turn, drawn in a single consistent style we agree on up front.
- A recurring main character (or small cast) kept visually consistent across every page, including the child, pet, or family member you want the book to star.
- A designed cover (front, spine area, and back) with title typography and a back-cover blurb.
- Typeset interior pages: the text placed into each illustration with a readable children's font, proper margins, and reading flow.
- A complete print-ready PDF sized to a standard picture-book trim, plus individual high-resolution page images (PNG/JPEG) at 300 DPI.
- A separate screen-optimized PDF for reading on tablets, phones, and e-readers.
- A dedication or title page personalized with the child's name and your message.
- Commercial-safe delivery: original art and text made for you, with usage rights covered in our agreement so you can print, gift, or sell copies (tier-dependent, see Plans).

How it works
- Brief. You tell me the child's name and age, the occasion, the message or lesson you want, and any must-have details (a favorite animal, a hometown, a sibling, a bedtime routine). Photos of the child or pet are welcome so the character resembles them.
- Story draft. I write the full text first and send it for your approval. Picture books live or die on the words, so we lock the story before any drawing begins.
- Style sample. I create a sample illustration of the main character in the style(s) your plan includes, so you can confirm the look before I commit to the whole book.
- Page production. With story and style approved, I illustrate each page, keeping characters, colors, and setting consistent throughout.
- Typesetting. I place the text into the artwork, design the cover and title/dedication page, and assemble the full layout.
- Review and revisions. You review the complete book and request changes within your plan's revision rounds.
- Delivery. I send the final print-ready PDF, the screen-reading PDF, and (Standard and up) the individual page images, all ready to print or read.
Why choose this
Because one person writes and draws the book, the story and the pictures are designed for each other from the first page. The jokes land on the page turns, the rhythm matches the art, and the main character looks the same in chapter one and at the goodnight ending. You are not assembling a template; you are commissioning a one-of-a-kind book that did not exist before your idea. I work in a single agreed style for the whole project so the result feels like a real published picture book, and I deliver files clean enough to send straight to a printer. Communication is direct and frequent: you approve the words before I illustrate, and you approve the look before I produce the full interior, so there are no expensive surprises at the end.
Who it's for / use cases
- Parents and grandparents who want a personalized keepsake starring their child as the hero.
- New-baby, birthday, adoption, and "big sibling" gifts that the family will keep for years.
- Teachers and therapists who need a gentle story about a specific topic (starting school, a new sibling, bravery at the dentist, managing big feelings).
- Couples and families memorializing a beloved pet in a kid-friendly story.
- Small businesses, nonprofits, and educators wanting a branded or topic-specific picture book for outreach.
- Aspiring self-publishers who have a story idea but need writing and illustration to bring it to print.
FAQ
Q: Is this a physical book or a digital file? It is a digital download. You receive print-ready and screen-reading PDFs plus image files. You can take the print-ready PDF to any print-on-demand service or local printer to make a physical copy.
Q: Can the main character look like my child or pet? Yes. Send reference photos and I will design the illustrated character to resemble them while keeping the friendly, stylized look of a picture book.
Q: Do you write the story too, or do I need to provide it? I write it. You give me the idea, details, and tone you want, and I draft the full text for your approval before any illustration starts. If you already have a finished story, I am happy to work from it.
Q: What art styles can you do? I work in warm, child-friendly illustration styles such as soft watercolor-like, flat storybook, and bold cartoon. We agree on one style up front, and your plan determines how many style drafts you see before we commit.
Q: Will it rhyme? It can. Tell me whether you want rhyming verse or simple prose, and I will match the format to the child's age and your preference.
Q: How many pages should my book be? Younger children do well with shorter books (around 10 pages); classic read-aloud picture books run 20 to 32 pages. Pick the plan that fits the age and story you have in mind.
Q: Can I print and sell copies? The Premium plan includes full commercial and self-publishing rights. Basic and Standard cover personal and small-run printing. We confirm the exact usage scope in writing before delivery.
Q: What if I want changes? Each plan includes revision rounds at the review stage. Because you approve the story and the art style before full production, most changes are small refinements rather than redos.

Commissioned a personalized story for my nephew and the finished book felt like something off a shelf at a bookstore. The pictures matched the story perfectly.

The custom characters looked exactly like I described and the rhyming text flowed so nicely. Honestly blown away by the artwork.

Lovely little book and the illustrations were charming. Took a couple of rounds to get the main character's hair color right, but the final result was worth it.
